Date archived: News: 10/11/2007 This year we are offering the public a special opportunity to buy shares of stock in our Summer Reading Program. By purchasing a share of stock, not only will your name or company name be publicized, but you will also help to promote life-long learning and the love of reading. To participate, donate at least $5.00 towards our summer reading program, and a stock certificate will be placed for all to see. One certificate for each $5.00 donated will be displayed. For more information, contact the library. 10/11/2007 You can now sign up for the Summer Reading Club here. You can send your book logs in here. Activity Days will be every Tuesday starting June 5th from 1 to 2 pm. The last activity day will be on July 24th.
Summer Saturday hours of 10 am to 2 pm will begin on June 16th, and will run until August 25th.
6/04/2007 Summer Reading will be kicked off on Saturday, June 2nd from 1 to 3 PM. Starting Monday, June 4th, you will be able to register and send your booklogs in via a link in this section. 3/28/2007 Teen Space Meetings: Teens are invited to help develop a new space in the library just for them. Meetings will be held every Wednesday between 5:00-5:30 pm starting on January 31st. 3/28/2007 New Adult Education Classes: Join Even Start and New Choices, New Options every Wednesday for an adult education class. Even Start is a family literacy program that teaches parenting skills as well as life skills. At the same time, New Choices, New Options provides basic classes on career exploration and basic computer skills. Parents and children are invited to attend both and both are free to the public. 3/28/2007 Ask Here PA is a new 24/7 online reference source for patrons of PA libraries. Click on the logo to access it. Clicking the logo will take you to a page where you can do a live chat with a reference librarian who will help you find the answers to your questions. 3/12/07 Adult Book Discussion will be held Tuesday, February 20th at 7 pm. This month's choice is "The Curious incident of the dog in the night-time" by Mark Haddon. The story centers on Christopher John Francis Boone who is a 15 year-old autistic boy who discovers his neighbor's dog has been murdered and then in wrongfully accused of doing it. After spending a night in jail, Christopher decides that he is going to discover the true murderer and write a book about it at the same time. 1/11/2007 Now available on the web, a gallery of images taken by local photographer Sammy Fischer. We believe the images were taken between the years 1900 and 1925. These images come from a collection of glass negatives that were donated to the library. A CD-Rom which includes a copy of the web gallery, a printable index, an acrobat format catalog of the images, plus high resolution versions is available for purchase from the library for $10+shipping. In addition, a DVD slideshow version with a printed catalog of the images is also available for the same price.

You can also read it here. 8/28/2006 Summer hours for the library will begin Saturday, June 17th. During the summer, the library is open from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Saturdays. Regular hours of 10:00am-5:00pm will resume Sept. 2nd. 8/23/2006 Summer Celebration for Children: The Pittsburgh Children's Museum presents: "Bearly Spring" & "Brian the Magnificent" at the Rimersburg (Union) Elementary School Gym on Saturday, August 12th from 10:00am through Noon. "Bearly Spring" involves a magical forest with woodland creatures presenting a message of self-esteem by We're Holden Puppets.
"Brian the Magnificent" is presented by Brian performing juggling, magic and comedy with a message of discipline and confidence.
This program was made possible through the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), a local decision-making program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA), a state agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Venango Center for Creative Development. The Ralph M. & Ella M. Eccles Foundation, the Eccles-Lesher Memorial library and the Friends of the Library have also contributed to this project for the children of the area.
8/1/2006 For Summer Reading Club Participants, you can send your book logs via online form here. 5/11/2006 Paws, Claws, Scales & Tales is the theme for this year's Summer Reading Club. Kick-Off: June 3 at Wal-Mart in Clarion from 10:00am -2:00pm. There will be games, crafts and raffles.
Registration begins May 30, 2006 at the library or online via an online form here. You can send your book logs via online form here.
Activity Day will be Tuesdays beginning June 6. Activities for Toddlers to 3-year-olds will be at 11:00am. Activities for 4-7 year-olds and for 8-12 year-olds will be a 1:00pm.
Bring a picture of you and your pet to be on display during the program. Set a goal as to how many books you can read in 7 weeks. Once you reach that goal you will receive a water bottle and your name will be entered into a drawing for a larger prize.

Note: We do not take the pictures, you wil need to provide them yourself. 4/27/2006 The library and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council will present "Bagpipes-An Historical Perspective" by Paul Fehrenback, Ph.D. of Penn State Universityof Dubois on Thursday, April 27th at 7 p.m. Musician and professor Paul Fehrenbach will discuss the evolution of bagpipes and perform in full Scottish regalia on the Medieval bagpipes, smallpipes and the Irish Uillean bagpipes.

2/12/2006 Congratulate Nancy (our children's librarian) next time you see her. She is one of 70 librarians from the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland who has been chosen to attend a program at the Goddard Space Flight Center. This program, To the Moon and Beyond: Engaging Children in NASA Lunar Exploration in Libraries is a partnership between NASA and the library community that uses a current NASA lunar mission to excite the kids about our nation's future exploration of the moon. Nancy will be leaving February 8th to attend this workshop. 2/4/2006 Winter Olympics - Feb 4, 2006 at 1 PM. For grades 2-6. Must pre-register as there is limited space. 12/15/05 Santa Pictures will be taken at the library on Friday, Dec. 2 after the parade at 6:30pm. The library will remain open that evening. 11/30/05 We are a part of "A Christmas Present." A Christmas Present will be from Thursday, November 3 through Saturday, Nov. 5. There will be local crafters and vendors set up in the library. The library hours for these days will be from 9am to 7pm. 11/30/05 Regular programming will resume in September. Click here for a complete list of currently planned programs. 10/23/05 Faces of the Civil War - On Tuesday, October 18th at 7 pm, Paul Newman, a history professor from the Univeristy of Pittsburgh at Johnstown will share the many faces of the Civil War in a slide presentation using both well-known and obscure Civil War photography. The American Civil War is remembered as a gallant and courageous conflict, in which the national family split between the Yankees and the Rebels. Newman explores the real human consequences of America's first modern armed conflict. Dr. Newman has been a military history consultant for Fort Necessity and Fort Ligonier. This presentation is a program of the PA Humanities Council, supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and its We the People Initiative. 10/2/05 Songs and Stories of Western PA - A Pennsylvania Humanities Council lecture will be held on Thursday, September 15th at 7pm at the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library. Paula Purnell, Commonwealth Speaker, will perform live on the guitar, banjo, and the Appalachian lap dulcimer presenting songs of the early settlers, coal miners, steel workers, and everyday people in this region. Other instruments will also be introduced like the Native American love flute, the washtub bass, the oonie can and the bones. Explore western Pennsylvania's exciting past through its regional folk music.
This presentation is free and open to the public. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council and a grant from Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania have supported this program. For more information contact the library.
8/30/05 The library has switched to its Saturday summer hours of 10:00am to 2:00pm. These hours will remain until the end of August. 8/21/05 Tickets are still available for the raffle of the LEGO Knights Kingdom set. Cost for tickets is $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will be held on August 13th at the Rimersburg Community Building. 8/21/05 The Summer Reading Celebration will be held on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Rimersburg Community Building. This Pittsburgh Children's Museum Program is for children and parents. A light lunch will be provided. At 10:00 a.m. storyteller Alan Irvin will present "Looking for Dragons this summer, for Heroic Quests, or for Medieval Adventures?"
At 11:00 a.m. We're Holden Puppets will present "The Sword", the legendary tale of King Arthur.
This program is free and open to the public and hosted by the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library. The project was supported by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania's General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by The Venango Center for Creative Development. A matching grant was provided by the Eccles Foundation.

The final date to send in your log will be July 26th. 7/19/05 The program "Dear Mr. Rogers" has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict on the part of the presenter. 7/11/05 The Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library will host the program "Dear Mister Rogers" presented by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council Commonwealth Speaker, Heather Arnet, a theater director from Pittsburgh on Thursday, July 14th at 7 p.m. When the children's program Mister Rogers was on television, Heather Arnet served as production and script assistant for five seasons. This program, "Dear Mister Rogers", is focused on the letters and stories that are included in the book Dear Mister Rogers. Heather's job was to assist in selecting the letters for inclusion and to then find the children who authored the letters and request their permission to publish their letters in the book. Through this extraordinary journey, she learned first hand the incredible ways that Fred Rogers inspired children to question and explore the world around them. 7/06/05 Summer Reading 2005: Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds. Starting May 31st, you can come in to the library and register for the Summer Reading Club. There will again be 5 groups: Read to Me, Readers to 4th Grade, 5th&6th grade readers, Teen Readers, and Adult Readers. You can now register for the Summer Reading club online. 3/19/2005 Come to the library on Saturday, March 19 at 2:00pm for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council lecture "It Started in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania". Dave Crawley, a PA Humanities Speaker, will share anecdotes and video highlights of inventions from Western Pennsylvania such as the Zippo of Bradford, zippers of Meadville, the first oil well, first jeep, first Gulf Station, the Ferris Wheel, Slinky, Big Mac and many more. Western PA is one of the most inventive regions in America. This program is free and open to the public. It is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. 2/6/2005 Our web card catalog is again up and working. Please email the library if you have any problems with it. 1/31/2005 The library, in partnership with the PA Humanities Council, the Federal State Partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is planning a book discussion of "How to make an American quilt" by Whitney Otto. 25 copies of the book are available for members of the discussion. If you would like to read this book and discuss it with others, please call the library to reserve a copy of the book. The books will be available for pick up at the library after Christmas. The Book discussion will take place on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at 7:00pm. As a follow up to the discussion, members will be able to join in a viewing of the movie based on the book on Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:00pm.
In addition, in honor of the book discussion, the library plans to do a quilt display during the month of January. If you have any questions, please call the library.
1/31/2005 The web card catalog is down for the time being. An announcement will be put here in the news section once it is available again. 1/15/2005 Beginning January 7, 2005, the library will be re-opening on Fridays from 10:00am-5:00pm thanks to an increase in State funding. We will be hiring a part time staff person to help cover these hours. 12/7/2004 You can now view the Union School District Calendar of Events in the library's Events section. To get there, click on the Card Catalog link above, then click on Events. 12/6/2004 Thanks to the generous donation of database processing and lots of effort by Ferry Street Technology, the library has a new, searchable version of the cemetery database. Click here for the updated search page. The old static pages will be removed within the month. 12/6/2004 Due to the 37% cut in the State budget for libraries, the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library will be laying off one staff person and closing on Fridays beginning February, 2004. Once there is a restoration of budget, we will resume our regular hours and full staff. 8/31/2004 By August of 2004, the library plans to make available for sale a CD with images of Rimersburg taken from glass negatives. The majority of these images are from 1905-1925. For more information, please click here. 8/31/2004 The library will begin its Saturday Summer Hours starting on June 12, 2004. Summer hours will be from 10am-2pm on Saturdays. The abbreviated hours for Saturday will continue through August 28th, with the exception of during the Cookie Daze festival, when we will be open from 10-5. 7/27/2004 Remember to list the books you have read this summer. You can now send your Reading Log to us using this form. 7/17/2004 Discover New Trails @ Your Library is this year's Summer Reading Program theme. Registration begins May 31, 2004. The program begins the week of June 14. When registering, the parent and child together will set a goal as to how many books the child will read during the program. If the child reaches their goal, they will receive a small prize. At the end of the program, the names of all the readers will be put into a drawing for each group and the winner will then receive a larger prize. We have four reading groups: * Read to Me group (where someone reads to the child)
*Readers up to 6th grade
*Teen Readers
*Adult Readers
Log books will be kept at the library to keep track of all their books. There will be an activity day once a week with a storytime, crafts, games and snacks. At the end of the program during Cookie Daze there will be a program to entertain the kids at the Community Building and afterwards we will have pizza and cookies. This program is free.

2/12/2004 We're moving! our website. Thanks to the generous donation of web hosting services by Ferry Street Technologies of East Brady, our web site is moving to http://www.eccles-lesher.org. For a time, our site will be mirrored on both urls, but you should update your book marks as soon as possible. 1/19/2004 The Web Card Catalog is once again available, and can be used to see what items we have, and to place hold/reserve requests. You can also view what items you have checked out, when they are due, and whether or not you have fines. Click on the Card Catalog link to get there. To use the My Info button, or place holds, you will need your library barcode number and will use your last name as your password.
There is a new home use service for those interested in genealogy. It is called Heritage Quest Online, and it includes searchable versions of history books and of the Census records to the 1920's. To use this service, you will need a current library card. To get to the entry point of Heritage Quest, go to the Library Collections by clicking the link above or click here. You will see the words "Click here to enter Heritage Quest Online (Library Barcode Required)" Click that link, and type your card number in the box that comes up. You will then have complete access to the Heritage Quest Online database.

Our history of rural one-room school houses in Southern Clarion County has been completed and was so successful that it has already sold out!

The Library is almost done! We will be closing on Friday February 28th at 5:00pm to start the move. We will be re-opening in the expanded library on April 1st (No, we aren't fooling about that). If you are interested in helping to move, call Joanne at 473-3800 or just show up between 9am and 3pm Monday-Friday, ready to help pack, move, and unpack.

10/02/02 We are currently working on a history of the rural one-room school houses in Southern Clarion County. This will be available for order once it has been completed.
